Enable the DMA modes for bringing out quality performance in Windows XP.

Hard drives and optical drives nowadays support DMA modes but most of the times, the modes does not activated under Windows XP.

DMA (Direct Memory Access) is a technique that allows a peripheral to read and write to memory without intervention by the CPU.

Follow through these steps to check the DMA status and enable the feature but make sure your drive support it.

1. Go to ‘Start’/‘Control Panel’/‘System’
2. Under ‘System Properties’ click on ‘Hardware’
3. Click on ‘Device Manager’ and go to ‘IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers’
4. Under the IDE controllers, double click on ‘Primary IDE Channel’
5. Click on ‘Advanced Settings’ and check the status of ‘Transfer Mode’
6. Make sure it is on ‘DMA if available’. If it is on ‘PIO only’, click on the dropdown and select ‘DMA if available’
7. The filed below - ‘Current Transfer Mode’ indicates the current status of the transfer mode
8. Click on ‘OK’ and Windows will automatically prompt you for a restart, select ‘Yes’ and restart your machine.

The ‘Primary IDE Channel’ and the ‘Secondary IDE Channel’ both support two drives each. Check the status of each one drives you have and make sure you take the advantage of the DMA mode.

I screened your intel just a moment ago, but I'm guessing you didn't get my feedback from that screening.

Can you please explain step number 7? The Primary IDE Channel Properties on my XP system shows Current Transfer Mode as Not Applicable. Does that mean that (1) my system is already DMA enabled, or that it can't be DMA enabled?

hi, i'm really sorry for the late reply.

Yes. if it is not applicable, that's mean your system is already DMA enabled and Windows Vista is already have full support of DMA.
